WOW Business Card

This is a business card created for WOW! Branding Company. It was featured in the Art of Promotion by Laura Cyr. As I've mentioned before, I am currently in the process of designing my own promotional materials. I looked into using alternative materials (like plastics, metals, cloth, die cuts, metallic inks) and the cost is astronomical, specially when you compare it to online printers like VistaPrint or Overnight Printing. I really wonder how much of a payoff there is to going through the expense of creating something like this. It looks amazing, it probably won't get thrown away, but will it generate enough revenue to offset the expense? What do you guys think?

It's hard to say, is the design worth the cost of using unique materials to better the chances of getting noticed? I would think that it is a good idea in that, like you stated it wouldn't be thrown away but instead passed around for others to appreciate. I think the bottom line is getting your product/advertisement into the right set of hands to begin with.

I like the idea, but at the end is all about connection.

Paula Scher says that packaging and product design (in this case, identity design) have the greatest impact when the competing products are more or less the same. If WOW and their direct competition are level in quality and offer the same services, maybe it would make a difference.

But even if their fabulous identity does increase business, will the additional income offset the cost of the cards? A great question. Maybe this needs to be couched in terms of the company's values and goals.

If the company's sole value is profit, then it's not worth it. But maybe WOW says, "In the end we need to make money; we live in the real world. But we're also interested in quality, and sometimes we choose to do something really great even if it doesn't generate profit."

So long as you maintain a balance, why not? If your goal is to make a living and also to do beautiful things (which are some times profitable, but not always), then it's worth it even you don't make a profit.
